Physiotherapy: What is it?
Physiotherapy, sometimes referred to as physical therapy, is a branch of medicine that uses a variety of therapeutic approaches and exercises to assist patients in regaining, maintaining, and improving their movement, physical function, and general well-being. How do I identify that the pains I’m dealing with should be seen by a physiotherapist?
Persistent Pain: Getting expert assistance is a good option if the pain has persisted for longer than a few weeks and doesn’t seem to be getting better.
Limited Mobility: A physiotherapist can assist in addressing problems if you observe a noticeable decrease in your range of motion or find it difficult to carry out daily tasks because of discomfort or stiffness.
Pain with Movement: Pain that arises or gets worse with particular motions or activities could be a sign of a more serious problem that a physiotherapist can address.
Post-Injury Pain: A physiotherapist can assist with recovery and rehabilitation if you have just sustained an injury and the pain continues even with rest and at-home treatment.
Chronic Pain Conditions: Physiotherapy can help manage the symptoms of conditions like fibromyalgia, arthritis, or chronic back pain. How long will it take to see results?
Here is a general outline of what to expect:
Acute Injuries: You may begin to feel better in a few days to a few weeks if you have recently had a minor injury.
Chronic Conditions: It may take a few weeks to many months before chronic conditions like arthritis, back pain, or repetitive strain injuries show any discernible relief. For these disorders, modest development and long-term management are normal.
Post-Surgery Rehabilitation: Following surgery, recovery is frequently assessed in terms of weeks or months.
Severe or Complex Conditions: Conditions that are more severe or complex may take longer to show noticeable improvements, anywhere from a few months to a year.
Rehabilitation Objectives: Depending on the initial state and intended result, achieving particular functional objectives, such as going back to a specific sport or activity, may take several months.
Does physical treatment hurt?
Certain treatments could be uncomfortable briefly, particularly if you’re treating a painful location. Physiotherapists, on the other hand, work to reduce discomfort and will modify their treatments to suit your comfort level.
What is the duration of a physiotherapy session?
Physiotherapy sessions often run from thirty minutes to an hour, depending on the patient’s needs and the specifics of the treatment plan.
Do I need a referral from a doctor to receive treatment?
No, you do not need a doctor’s referral to receive treatment at our clinic. However, some extended healthcare insurance plans may require a referral for reimbursement. Please check with your insurance provider.
How do I book an appointment?
You can book an appointment through our online booking system, by phone, or by visiting our clinic. We offer flexible appointment times to accommodate your schedule.
Are your services covered by OHIP?
No, our services are not covered by OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan). We operate as a private clinic, which means patients are responsible for the full cost of their treatments. However, many of our services may be covered by extended healthcare insurance plans, so we recommend checking with your insurance provider for details on coverage.
Why aren’t your services covered by OHIP?
OHIP generally covers essential medical services provided by physicians and hospitals. Paramedical services such as physiotherapy, chiropractic care, massage therapy, and acupuncture are typically not included in OHIP coverage when provided at private clinics. However, some publicly funded physiotherapy clinics may provide limited services for eligible patients.
Can I use my private insurance to cover the cost of treatments?
Yes, many extended healthcare insurance plans cover paramedical services like physiotherapy, chiropractic care, massage therapy, and acupuncture. If you have private insurance, we recommend confirming your coverage details with your provider. We can also assist with direct billing if your plan allows it.
Can you bill my insurance directly?
Yes, we offer direct billing for most extended healthcare insurance providers. This allows us to submit claims directly to your insurance company, so you only pay any remaining balance not covered by your plan.
What if my insurance doesn’t cover the full cost of treatment?
If your insurance plan doesn’t fully cover a service, you will be responsible for paying the balance. We offer flexible payment methods, including credit card, debit card, cash, and e-Transfers.
What are my payment options if I don’t have insurance?
If you don’t have extended healthcare insurance or your insurance doesn’t cover the full cost of treatment, you can pay for services out-of-pocket. We accept a variety of payment methods, including:
- Credit and debit cards
- Cash
- e-Transfers
We also offer package deals and flexible payment plans to make treatments more affordable.
Are there any alternative options for OHIP-covered physiotherapy?
Yes, OHIP covers physiotherapy at publicly funded clinics for certain eligible groups, including:
- Seniors aged 65 and older
- Youths under 19 years old
- Individuals receiving ODSP or Ontario Works benefits
- Those who have been recently discharged from the hospital for a condition requiring physiotherapy
If you fall into one of these categories, you may be eligible for OHIP-covered physiotherapy at specific locations, but our clinic operates privately and does not offer OHIP-funded services.
What are the benefits of private care even if it's not covered by OHIP?
Choosing private care at our clinic offers several benefits:
- Immediate Access: No long wait times for appointments.
- Personalized Treatment: One-on-one sessions tailored to your specific needs.
- Comprehensive Services: Access to a wide range of services (e.g., massage, acupuncture) that may not be available in public settings.
